Ukrnafta has launched 3D seismic surveys in the west of Ukraine.
These are the first 3D seismic surveys in Ukraine to use a wireless data logging system and the first 3D seismic surveys for Ukrnafta in the west of Ukraine. Moreover, the Company has engaged in such project for the first time in the last 10 years!
The method is as follows: powerful vibrator machines operate on the surface, creating seismic waves moving underground. The waves are reflected from different rocks with the relevant parameters. Data is collected on the surface using an extensive network of special seismic sensors – geophones.
Sensors can be connected to wires, which is a more common, but not latest method. It is much more efficient to use state-of-the art wireless systems, especially in difficult surface conditions, such as in mountainous areas.
The works involving 80 sq.m of Ukrnafta’s areas require from its specialists to use 3 seismic vibrators, explosive sources and 20,000 receiver sensors.
In total, more than a hundred employees will be involved.
“The data obtained, like an ultrasound image, will make it possible to assess the internal structure of prospective horizons and understand where and to what depth new wells need to be drilled,” Sergii Koretskyi, CEO at UKRNAFTA, says. “In 2023, the Company plans to start another similar survey in the east of Ukraine, using the advanced technology.”
In 2024, Ukrnafta plans to use wireless data logging systems and is going to explore about 1,000 sq.m in the west and east of Ukraine.
