Ukrnafta has built a full-cycle packer service for wells: how it works

Ukrnafta has put in place a full in-house packer service for well operations. This means key operations can now be carried out by the company’s own teams, with Ukrnafta able to control quality and delivery timelines directly.

“A turnkey packer service has been established within the Oilfield Services Division — from equipment procurement and engineering design through to installing the tools directly in the wells,” said Bogdan Kukura, Chairman of the Management Board of JSC “Ukrnafta”.

A packer is run in a well to isolate formations (rock layers containing oil or gas) and to manage fluid flow.

The tool makes it possible to control production and injection regimes. Previously, some of this work was performed by external contractors. Today, Ukrnafta’s Oilfield Services Division delivers the full scope in-house.

As of today:

service hubs have been set up in Poltava and Ivano-Frankivsk

the company has built its own equipment fleet of more than 110 units

electronic tracking has been introduced

an in-house calculation tool has been developed — the “Packer Calculator”.

A separate strand covers autonomous single- and dual-packer assemblies, which allow several zones in a well to be isolated at the same time and enable more precise control of production or fluid injection.

The result is less reliance on external service providers, optimised costs, improved operational reliability and the development of deep in-house service expertise.
