Ihor Semiankiv has been in the profession for over 30 years. Progressing from field-level positions to executive responsibilities, he currently oversees the workshop and manages a team of 85 employees.

His story is about the people he learned from, the changes in the industry, and what helps him recharge after work.

At the beginning of his career path

In 1993, I graduated from the Drohobych Oil and Gas Technical College and was assigned to work as an oil and gas production operator.  Shortly after, I was drafted into the military service, so I resumed my career after completing my service. 

On mentors

When I was mastering the profession, experienced colleagues were there to guide me. Senior colleagues always advised: be curious about your work and ask questions. That is exactly how I gained experience.  

On the journey from operator to production unit head

I started my career at the production site. Later, I became a crew supervisor, then worked as Deputy Head of the production unit and as a production engineer. That is how I gradually advanced to a managerial role, and today I head the production unit and I am responsible for the team.  

On the team and support from colleagues

Managing a team at first was not easy due to the heavy responsibility.  But my colleagues and managers have been a great help. They understand the situation and offer support. When you have such people around you, you gradually grow into the responsibility.  

On changes in the industry over the years

Technology offers far more opportunities now.  We use telemetry extensively — we can remotely manage wells, monitor their operations, and shut them down if necessary.  Progress does not stand still, and we are moving forward with it. 

On recharging after work

First and foremost, I recharge with my family.  When we get the chance, we go to the river.  During holidays, we enjoy travelling around Ukraine.  That is how we spend our time together.
