Artificial Intelligence Helps Ukrnafta
Artificial Intelligence Helps Ukrnafta "Read" the Subsoil and Produce Oil Efficiently

Ukrnafta continues its digital transformation. Today, artificial intelligence has become one of the key tools that helps the Company work more accurately with resources, make more balanced technological decisions, and increase production efficiency.

The Research and Design Institute of "Ukrnafta" has designed five neural-network-based tools that are already changing the approach to geology and field development planning.

1. Automatic processing of large scopes of geological and field data.

Specialists perform data analysis, text recognition, document structuring based on images, and automatic translation of documents into Ukrainian. By July 2026, they plan to complete processing of 1.8 million scanned paper carriers and create a full-scale archive of geological and field documents.

2. Recognition and classification of geophysical studies and log curves.

Neural networks facilitate and improve the quality of the digitisation process for scanned logging plots. Due to this, specialists quickly obtain critical data to analyse and identify the productive formations and their properties. Furthermore, they designed a module for automatic depth ties of logging curves using neural networks.

3. Automatic interpretation of lithological and petrophysical properties

A powerful geophysical research analysis tool that reproduces the logic of an experienced interpreter, automatically generating a preliminary forecast of important properties over the entire cross-section. This allows specifying reservoir boundaries, finding potentially productive intervals, and adopting field development strategies faster and more accurately.

4. Data preparation for digital 3D field models

The full cycle of source data preparation for digital field models is automated. Basically, we are laying the foundation for digital fields — digital duplicates that help manage the field in real time.

5. Recommendation system for selecting candidate wells for intensification activities.

Neural networks are used to analyse the accumulated experience of process operations performed and predict flow rates for each well after intensification. This approach allows to quickly identify for further analysis the intervals where the operations can yield the greatest increase in production right now.

The Company performs systematic work that allows effectively using the data array accumulated over decades, combining it with the results of modern studies, and achieving a new accuracy level, both in planning and field operations.

In 2026, "Ukrnafta" will continue to use new technologies:

▪️ upscaling of digital transformation

▪️ optimising production processes

▪️ fast and most accurate production forecasting

▪️ automating seismic data interpretation

▪️ intelligent forecasting of equipment operation.

"Ukrnafta" is moving to ensuring that hydrocarbon production in Ukraine is based on accurate data, digital models, and state-of-the-art technological solutions, which will help ensure the country's energy sustainability more effectively.
